What do you find inspirational about Black History Month?
It provides the opportunity for everyone to understand and celebrate the rich history of Black achievement and excellence.
Who is your Black hero or role model and why?
The Tuskegee Airmen: I admire what they overcame at home and aboard to become a fierce and important air combat unit during WW II.
What is your favorite Black character from a movie, TV show, or book and why?
Denzel Washington in “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” He was brilliant yet socially awkward.
What movie, TV show, or book would you recommend to someone who wants to be a better ally to Black individuals?
Visit the National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington D.C.
What advice would you give to a young Black lawyer just starting out in their career?
Find a good mentor, hone your skills, stay active in your local bar/professional organization and learn how to lead, build a strong professional network, and just get out there and develop a strong reputation.
What advice would you give legal employers about what they can do to make workplaces welcoming and supportive for Black lawyers?
Be intentional on improving diversity, inclusion and equity. It takes work, effort and energy and will only succeed if diversity is ingrained in the culture of your organization and supported by your leadership. Leadership must work hard to first recognize and then remove the barriers that impede the development of diverse attorneys.
